How to turn on data roaming for a travel eSIM

If your travel eSIM is installed but you have no data after landing, data roaming is almost always the reason. Here is what to change, and why it is safe.

Why a travel eSIM needs data roaming

A travel eSIM connects through partner networks in your destination, so your iPhone treats it as roaming. Turning data roaming on for the travel line does not cost extra: you have already paid for the plan.

Turn on data roaming for the travel line

Open Settings → Mobile Service (or Cellular). Tap your travel eSIM line and turn on Data Roaming.

Keep data roaming off for your home line

In the same screen, tap your usual line and make sure Data Roaming is off. Otherwise your home operator can still charge you for data used abroad.

Choose which line uses mobile data

In Settings → Mobile Service, tap Mobile Data (or Cellular Data) and choose your travel line. Your usual line can stay on for calls and messages, so your own number keeps working.

Still no connection?

Turn Airplane Mode on and off to make your iPhone search for a network again.

If no network appears after a few minutes, open your travel line in Settings → Mobile Service, go to Network Selection, turn off Automatic and choose a network from the list.
